Groups
  • No running or skylarking. Those caught will be cautioned. Second time they are not allowed into the show. 
  • All exits are clear of obstructions and fully illuminated at night.
  • We have an emergency exit off the main deck at rear of observatory to the car park.
  • First Aid Kit and CO2 fire extinguishers throughout the complex.
  • All main entrances and exits have ramps, allowing for wheelchair and those with walker frames to come and go with ease.
  • All those on the Obs. Deck for a night sky viewing session MUST be seated before, during and after the roof opening.

  • Once the group has arrived they are met by the astronomer. 
  • Teachers are shown the layout of the buildings before the sessions start.
  • A Tax Invoice is issued on the night.

Night Sky Viewing sessions PDF Print E-mail

MAOpic Best times to bring Year 1-6 children is when the Moon is between First Quarter and a few nights before Full Moon.

Best times for Year 7-12 children is on a 'No-Moon' night as they get to see more stars, constellations, nebulae, etc.

Worst times to do any stargazing is close to and around a Full Moon.

We can seat 36 persons on the Observation Deck and 65 persons in the Star Theatre and 15 persons in the Display Centre.

Night sky session last for approx. 60 minutes per class.

What do you get to see?
For schools, we show the kids the Moon, Planets and distant suns - stars and the Milky Way (when there is no moon).
We also cover whatever the teacher/s want the kids to learn more about as we have a program to suit all ages! They also get a green lasaer sky guide before we start
If a school has more than one class we can do a two-night event with Prep to Yr4 and Yr 5-7 on the next night.The kids can camp out near the Observatory or sleep over in the hall and have brekky suplied by the shop next door.
Showers are on the Obs. site and the cost is $1 per child and $2 adult (council charges).

Night sky session costs: Student:  $12.50;   Teachers are FREE and Adult Supv.pay the Concession price of $18 per person.
